Today, too, the Vatican has announced that the former (now defrocked) Polish archbishop Józef Wesołowski who was previously the Vatican ambassador to the Dominican Republic has been indicted and will face charges for sexual abuse of minors and possession of child pornography. Observers say these latest moves seems to signal an unprecedented effort by Rome to hold bishops accountable in the abuse crisis.
Both Nienstedt and Wesołowski are, if my memory is correct, the legacy of Pope John Paul II, who made both men bishops.
