A daughter and her husband who stole Rs. 1.4 million worth of gold jewelry and two ATM cards which had been hidden inside a bottle in a hole dug by the mother in the kitchen floor were arrested yesterday by the Ratnapura Police Crimes Division. The daughter and her husband reside in Kirindiwela.

Police said that the daughter, who is the youngest in the family, and her husband are working in a garment factory.

Investigations have revealed that these two got married without the consent of their parents

and ran away from home arbitrarily.

The daughter’s husband is a resident of Kadirana Watte, Mattakkuliya. One day last year, when the two of them were visiting her mother’s house in Dandeniya Malwala, Ratnapura, they had

seen the mother hiding the gold items in the house in a hole in the kitchen and placing something over it, to cover it. Keeping it in mind, the police said that she had stolen the gold items there

from time to time and pawned them.

At the end, the two ATM cards there had also been stolen. She also had the secret numbers of those two cards. She had also obtained an amount of one hundred thousand rupees from time to

time, using those two cards.

Police investigations have revealed that the theft had taken place between October 2 last year and January 23 this year. However, the mother had complained to the police that her gold

jewellery and two ATM cards had been stolen, only on Tuesday. This was after she had gone to the bank and met the manager and identified those who took money using her bank

cards through inspecting security camera footage. The money had been withdrawn using her bank card by the son-in-law.

Police said that she has complained about this to the police after she had got down her

daughter and her son-in-law to her house on Tuesday tactfully. The police said that she had complained about this theft, stating that she suspects her daughter and son-in-law.
