Following her debut EP ‘Spring Demos’ (released via our friends at Fox Food Records in 2017), Canadian singer-songwriter Dana Gavanski has signed to Full Time Hobby and shared new single ‘One By One’ ahead of its release on 7″ vinyl on 26 April (pre-order here).
Three and a half minutes of heartbreak and isolation, the song finds Dana recalling wistful memories of a new love that has fizzled out. She says the song is ‘a tender embrace of the feeling of being alone in the world, and moving on with it’ and how it’s about ‘the dark interiors of the mind, and remembering to open the windows’.
Recalling Lucy Dacus or Bon Iver with its swaying melody, gentle bass and Dana’s falsetto, the lyrics are tender and moving and draw comparisons with feelings to the things around us: ‘One by one, I think of how he’s gone as the sun has drawn for the day’; ‘There’s no open door and no voice in the night to tell her it’s alright, like a light on a darkened street’; ‘Now that it’s done, it reminds me that I’m one as my eyes squint at the sun’ Bon Iver.
The song finishes with Dana tenderly singing and repeating: ‘Like a smile on their face, one I can never erase’ with passion and devotion.
