The rise of internet technology has transformed the daily lives of people for the better. From education and commerce to healthcare and national security, cyberspace touches on nearly every sector. As the Internet has grown, however, its fragility and vulnerabilities have become evident: corporations, government agencies, national infrastructure and individuals have all been victims of cyber-attacks. That is why securing cyberspace and maintaining an open, interoperable, secure, and reliable Internet is vital to our economy and security.
This award is designed to enable academic or professional experts in cyber security to conduct research, pursue professional development, and/or assess best practice at any UK institution for a period of three to six months. Research outputs should produce benefits of significance to the larger cyber security community. Dan Burk, Chancellor’s Professor of law at UCI, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar cyber security grant to conduct research at the Oxford Internet Institute in the United Kingdom this fall. An internationally prominent authority on legal and social issues related to high technology, Burk will study “Statutory Protocols for Access to Secured Digital Content,” specifically, the U.K.’s administrative procedures for consumer access to encrypted information.
This is Burk’s second Fulbright award. His previous grant in 2011 was to research German and European Union comparative biotechnology patent processes at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation & Competition. A founding faculty member of UCI’s School of Law, Burk is among the most cited authors in the U.S. on intellectual property. “I am enormously grateful to UCI Law and the Fulbright program for this opportunity to collaborate with some of the world’s top internet research experts,” Burk said. He is one of more than 800 U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research and provide expertise abroad for the 2017-18 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.
