A P-40 Tomahawk makes a photo pass during the 2022 California Capital Airshow. The paint scheme of this P-40 commemorates one of the first American heroes of WWII, 2nd Lt George Welch, who claimed four kills on enemy aircraft during the attack on Pearl Harbor. This P-40 served on the Russian Northern Front until it was shot down on February 1, 1942, making it the first combat loss of its type in the European Theater. Recovered in 1990 and restored in New Zealand, this aircraft is one of only two airworthy P-40Cs in existence. Over 13,700 P-40s had been built by the time production ended in December 1944.
