A clean and shiny EC-46 Commando on outdoor display at the Tokorozawa Aviation Museum outside Tokyo. The Japan Air Self Defense Force had a fleet of 48 C-46 aircraft. Nine were C-46As were purchased from the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) in 1959 and converted to C-46D standard and operated in transport roles until 1977. Three of them were later modified to EC-46D configuration for use by the JASDF Air Defense Command ECM Squadron for electronic warfare training from 1973-1978. Based on a pressurized airliner design, the C-46 Commando was built by Curtiss-Wright and used primarily as a military transport aircraft. Entering service in 1941, the type continued in U. S. Air Force service in a secondary role until 1968. This Commando was placed in the park in March 1980, prior to the museum’s 1985 opening.
