In a normal eye, light passes through the transparent lens and received by the retina. The lens should be clear to receive a sharp image. But if the lens is cloudy then the image received by the retina will be blurry or distorted and the vision will also be blurry. The visual extent depends upon the degree of cloudiness of the lens.
What is a Cataract?
A cataract is a dense and cloudy area that forms in the eye lens. A cataract begins when there is a formation of clumps of proteins that prevent the lens from sending clear images to the retina. The retina converts the light that comes through the lens into signals. These signals are sent to the optic nerve which carries them to the brain.
It is the most common cause of vision loss in people who are above the age of 40 and it also leads to blindness. It develops with age in older people and interferes with the vision. It may occur in both eyes but not at the same time. This clouded vision makes them more difficult to read, drive a car (especially at night) or see the face expression, etc.
Types of Cataracts include:
A subcapsular cataract: It usually occurs at the back of the lens in those people who are suffering from diabetes or those taking high doses of steroid medications. These are at higher risk of developing this type of cataract.
A nuclear cataract: This type of cataract forms deep in the nucleus of the lens and is commonly associated with aging.
A cortical cataract: It is characterized by white and wedge-like opacities that start in the periphery of the lens. It occurs in the cortex, which is the part of the lens that surrounds the nucleus.
