Cunningham-Hall GA-36

@ Buffalo, NY

August 2018

Smaller aviation museums can surprise you with some rare locally devolped aircraft like this Cunningham-Hall GA-36 featured at the Niagara Aerospace Museum. The Cunningham-Hall Aircraft Corp of Rochester, NY designed and built the GA-21, a two-seat sportplane design with high and low speed capability. A distinguishing design feature was full span flaps and ailerons that could only move upward. The GA-36 seen here was the GA-21 rebuilt in 1936 as a military trainer with tandem, rather than side-by-side seating. Unsuccessful in obtaining a military contract, the aircraft was sold in 1941 to a Michigan buyer only wanting the engine. The airframe was discovered in 1978 and became the subject of a major restoration effort.
