Pat Cummins smashed 56 off 15 (the joint-fastest fifty, off 14 balls) in a scintillating, match-turning cameo that left Mumbai Indians with three defeats in as many fixtures.
It was Cummins’s final over in the first innings – worth 23 runs – which enabled MI to push towards a big score of 161/5 but Cummins arrived in the 14th over and absolutely dwarfed it with an effort that included four fours and six big sixes which guided Kolkata Knight Riders to beat Mumbai Indians by five wickets in their IPL game played at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on Tuesday.
Suryakumar Yadav’s 360-degree game provided the thrill, Dewald Brevis exhibited his fearlessness, and Tilak Varma showed why he’s rated highly. As well as each of them did to set up a potentially tricky 162 chase for Kolkata Knight Riders on a sticky Pune deck, Mumbai Indians clearly had not envisaged the mayhem that was to follow.
Having taken five wickets in what was a spirited defence up to a point, Mumbai saw the match unravel – really fast – as Pat Cummins walloped the joint-fastest IPL half-century, in just 14 balls, to seal the deal with four overs left. Venkatesh Iyer, who overcame a slow start, made a half-century of his own before watching the final few moments from the best seat in the house at the non-striker’s end.
