Meta lately revealed that its recent NFT feature will enable users to connect their digital wallets to Instagram and Facebook.
On August 29, Facebook and Instagram’s parent company Meta reported that its users can now post digital collectibles and NFTs, to both platforms by connecting their digital wallets to either site easily.
As Meta’s announcement may sound like a mass adoption win for some digital asset enthusiasts, not all crypto-Twitter members were excited by the news.
Suspicious social media users have taken to these social media platforms to express concerns about the security and privacy of the data exposed when digital wallets are connected.
Twitter user and Web3 community member NPC-Picac tweeted, “I don’t think it’s smart at all to entrust digital collectibles to connect to ‘Meta’.”
Another member of Twitter’s crypto community, CryptoBartender, raised worried about what Meta might do with the data they enter from digital wallets, tweeting: “So they can find which wallets you own, and keep tabs on you and your crypto activities?”
Some users felt that attaching valuable digital assets to a person’s identity could make users targets for fraud and theft. “This is great for adoption. But isn’t dangerous as well? Asked a user working under the famousfxck control.
Others shared their views on people giving away even more personal data to companies that have a long history of abusing users’ data and privacy.
In the announcement, Meta revealed that, as part of keeping its platforms safe and interesting, “people can use our tools to keep their accounts safe and report digital collectibles that violate our guidelines”. Meta has not yet shared any specific plans it has in place to keep its users’ digital wallet information safe.
