The launch of Cristiano Ronaldo’s NFT series has increased search traffic for keywords like “celebrity NFTs”.
The news in which professional football player Cristiano Ronaldo is releasing an NFT series with crypto exchange Binance has led to an increase in the number of people searching for NFT-related search terms, according to a price analysis firm.
CoinGecko states that search for “celebrity NFTs” increased by 1,250% as the keyword “Binance” grew by about 500%. There has also been a 376% increase in searches for ‘Ronaldo’ in the last week – but the Portuguese star has had a busy week. On Tuesday, he was released by Manchester United after a candid media interview and then, on Thursday, became the initial male footballer to score at five FIFA World Cups.
The previous week, Binance announced a “multi-year” cooperation with Ronaldo – widely regarded as the best player of his generation – that would include the release of his initial NFT series. This series features seven animated statues with rarities ranging from common to super rare.
It is not unusual for sports begins to enter the world of cryptocurrencies and NFTs. In May, Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo became OKCoin’s brand ambassador, as athletes like golfer Bryson DeChambeau and former skateboarder Tony Hawk have released their NFTs. But the news that one of the world’s most marketable athletes, with millions of fans worldwide, was entering the NFT world takes the crypto sector into a totally new dimension.
‘Celebrities have become integral to success of NFTs’
Ronaldo said when the series was released: “I worked closely with Binance to develop a series which gives me a special way to not just connect with my fans, but to communicate with them into the game in a new and more profound way as rewarding them for their support.”
“My fans have been a big part of my success, and I’m excited to build a fan-centric economy to let fans own an exclusive piece of sports history. Together with Binance, I want to welcome Web3 fans via the world of NFTs.”
“Due to the level of influence and popularity celebrities have, they have become integral to the success of NFT projects,” said Bobby Ong, COO and Co-Founder of CoinGecko. He added: “Fans and followers aim to spend on collectibles and experiences created by their favorite stars, and that involves digital collectibles such as NFTs.”
