Creating the Ultimate Sleeping Space for Summer

There’s something so lovely about booking a night away in a luxury hotel. I love everything about it from the impossibly large beds to the cute and quirky finishing touches that make each hotel unique. This weekend we had the pleasure of staying at the Woodhall Hotel and Spa and only the promise of buttery toast and blueberry muffins could tempt me away from quite honestly the comfiest bed I’ve ever slept in. I love the luxury of sleeping in a hotel room when I’m away but one thing I always look forward to after a holiday is sleeping in my own bed. I love nothing more than sinking into my super soft sheets with a good book and a cup of green tea (ah the glamorous life). As a result, I’m always on the look out for new luxurious bedding brands and any other type of products that will enhance my sleeping space in general. A fragrant linen spray, a cosy bed throw and of course a cloud like duvet. So when Frette got in touch to introduce their luxury bedding collection, it was the perfect opportunity to share my bedroom essentials and give you a few tips on how to create that five star boutique hotel room feel at home.

Make your bed the focal point: The first thing you will notice when you walk into a luxury hotel room is the bed. If you are planning a complete bedroom overhaul, opt for a King size bed as nothing makes a room look grander than a super sized bed. However, you don’t need to replace your bed to make a statement. Upgrade your existing bed with a stylish headboard in an oversized design or opt for the simplest and most cost effective option, stacks and stacks of pillows and cushions.

Invest in the finest bedding: This is a tricky one especially if like me you can’t live without a permanent coat of fake tan. Hotel bedding is almost always crisp and white. Part of the fabulousness of a night away is knowing that you don’t have to fret should your arise to a you shaped fake tan shape on the bedding the next morning as someone else is responsible for maintaining the whiteness of the sheets. Hotel bedding is luxurious and often boasts a high thread count (600 is my benchmark) so when searching for your own bedsheets keep this in mind. You will need a bottom sheet, a duvet cover, pillow cases and a matching throw in fabrics such as cotton sateen (my personal favourite), silk blend or linen.

Opt for an understated elegant design: Forget floral prints and bold nautical stripes, hotel bedding is always simple and timeless. White bedding will always give your room a light and airy feel. The easiest way to create a well turned out bed is to buy a matching set from a luxurious bedding boutique. This way the delicately coloured trim will complement the color of the bed throw and cushions perfectly. Grey trims are always a nice touch and are perfect for contemporary bedrooms.

Keep Symmetry  in mind: Add a couple of bedside tables to create a symmetrical room design. Every aspect of a hotel room is planned out perfectly right down to the very last detail from the perfectly placed bedside tables to the matching lamps. The bedside table provides the opportunity to add a personal touch to the room. I love to populate acrylic trays with personal items such as rose gold candles, trinkets, flowers, fragrances and ornaments.

Add little luxuries: If you want a true boutique hotel feel, the little finishing touches matter. Invest in a fluffy white robe and fill your bathroom with plush towels and lots of posh pampering treats. Jo Malone is always my go-to brand and their lime, basil and mandarin soap and linen sprays are ideal for giving your bedroom a five start feel.

Assess your tog rating: The summer months require a more lightweight duvet and the higher the tog the warmer you will be so it makes sense to check out the tog of your current duvet. In winter a 15 tog duvet will keep you toasty and warm but you should consider a tog number that falls between 4 and 8 for the warmer months.

If you have followed me on my travels since the start of my blog, you will know that I actually took emulating hotel style bedding to the next level when I visited Las Vegas. To my amazement, the shop in the lobby actually sold the exact bedding, duvets and pillows used in their hotel rooms so naturally I boarded the plane with my carry on bag and a vacuum packed pillow in each arm. While not the easiest of items to haul through airport security, this is a decision I will never regret as every night I sink into bed and pat myself on the back for such a wise purchase. Frette are one of the few companies I have come across who have created a Hotel bedding collection (see the Hotel classic range here and have designed bedding collections for leading luxury hotels around the world which means I no longer have to lug it home in my carry on. Hurray!
