Crabshakk Pop-up at Cathedral House

By Emma @glasgowfoodie

Crabshakk goes east

West End favourite Crabshakk are currently holding a pop-up at Cathedral House Hotel just off High Street and near to St Mungo’s Museum, the Royal Infirmary and the Necropolis.

Within sight of Glasgow Cathedral and a short walk from the Merchant City is Cathedral House Hotel. It’s been a stop off for many a pint and cuppa over the years. This time, we were visiting specifically for the Crabshakk pop-up.

Due to the ‘glorious’ Glasgow weather, we booked an indoor table but actually, the weather wasn’t too bad when we arrived. If you decide to sit outside yourself then there is a secluded heated beer garden off the main road.

It’s small plates so we ordered an assortment of dishes to share.  These were delivered as they were made, arriving quickly in the following order.

Salt cod accras with wild garlic gazpacho (£8.50)

Chunky cod encased within fluffy fritters.  The green gazpacho with coriander shoots was fresh and summery.

Crab roll & fries – yuzu kosho mayo, celery, tomato and cucumber (£14.50)

A tasty brioche bun filled with finely shredded crab. The mayonnaise could have been more pronounced as we couldn’t have told you if there was any Yuzo Kosho there as we couldn’t taste any citrus spice tang.

Spanish tortilla & aioli (v) (£7.95)

Seriously garlicky aioli👌, however, the tortilla was firmer than we had hoped. Less of the omelette consistency and more of an egg and potato baked slice. This might sound a bit pedantic but if you’ve sampled a fair amount of tortillas in Spain you’ll know what we mean. Still, this would be ideal for a picnic or a takeaway snack, wandering about dipping the tortilla into the garlic mayo. 😍

Taramasalata, asparagus and pangrattato (£7.95)

Smokey and creamy taramasalata with crisp and flavoursome asparagus topped with salty breadcrumbs and oil. If only we had a table outside and a good bottle of white wine then I would have been even happier!

Scallops with chicken butter and tarragon crumb (£9.95)

Large and expertly cooked scallops that arrived with a sizzling flourish. The caramelised chicken butter sauce gives it a certain moreish savoury quality.

Mahlabia with pomegranate syrup & pistachio (£7)

Mahlabia is a milk pudding almost like a pannacotta. Creamy and smooth but not overly sweet as the syrup and pistachios balanced out this dessert. On the side was an extremely tasty and addictive ball of halva coated with sesame seeds.

Orange fondant cake with rhubarb and creme fraiche (£7.50)

Moist, tasty and moreish.  Superb cakeage with undeniably tart rhubarb.

Verdict

So, the original Crabshakk is a restaurant that we’ve been planning to visit for the best part of a decade! Now, we have finally sampled the food, albeit in a slightly different locale, at the historic Cathedral House Hotel, which has the added advantage of a beer garden.

With lockdown rules still in force, we had our table for less than 2 hours but actually, all our food came out really quickly so our bellies were full in a little over an hour. The total cost of our food was £63.35, which is reasonable for the high standard of food. NHS staff can also get 10% off Tuesday – Thursday.
