This brings to more 156 00 the number total number of deaths recorded in the country since the start of the new coronavirus pandemic, which appeared in China in December.

The United States has also noted 53 847 new cases of infection on a day, for an official total of 4, 77 million, according to continuously updated figures from the Baltimore-based university.

The country is by far the most affected in the world by the pandemic, but President Donald Trump once again adopted a resolutely optimistic tone on Tuesday.

“Certain indicators show that our relentless efforts to contain the virus are actually working very well, especially to protect the most vulnerable people,” he said at a press conference at the White House on the health crisis.

The Republican billionaire continues to justify the increase in the number of cases of infections recorded by the increase in the number of screening tests carried out.

“The United States alone tests more people in a week than, quite often, many large countries combined,” he said.
