COVID-19: at Least 531,000 Deaths Worldwide

(Paris) The pandemic of the new coronavirus has caused at least 523 789 dead worldwide since the WHO China office reported the appearance of the disease at the end of December, according to an assessment established by AFP from official sources Sunday at 11 h.

More than 11 343 890 cases of infection were officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the beginning of the epidemic, of which at least 5 906 500 are today considered cured.

This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections. Some countries only test severe cases, others use testing as a priority for tracing, and many poor countries have only limited screening capacity.

Since the count made on Saturday at 15 h, 4205 new deaths and 182 459 new cases have been identified worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths are Brazil with 1091 new deaths, India (613) and Mexico (523).

The United States, which recorded its first coronavirus-related death in early February, is the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 100 718 death for 2 852 807 case. At least 894 325 people have been declared cured.

After the United States, the most affected countries are Brazil with 64 265 dead for 1 577 0 004 case, the United Kingdom with 37 220 dead (285 416 case), Italy with 30 861 dead (241 611 case), and Mexico with 29 366 dead (241 138 case).

Among the countries hardest hit, Belgium is the one that deplores the greatest number of deaths compared to its population, with 84 death for 100 000 0 inhabitants, followed by the United Kingdom (65), Spain (58), Italy (54), and Sweden (54).

China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao) has officially counted a total of 83 553 cases (8 new between Saturday and Sunday), of which 4634 Death (0 new), and 78 516 healings.

Europe totaled Sunday at 15 h 196 310 death for 2 725 84 case, the United States and Canada 138 446 death (2 958 343), Latin America and the Caribbean 100 861 death (2 876 303 case), Asia 34 904 death (1 472 426 case), the Middle East 17 833 death (825 224 case), Africa 11 302 death (476 535 case), and Oceania 133 death (9972 case).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to corrections by the authorities or late publication of data, the increase figures on 17 h may not correspond exactly to those published the day before.
