The 77 638 new infections recorded over a day bring to almost 3, 64 million the number of positive cases in the country since the start of the pandemic.
COVID – 19 also did 927 new victims in 24 hours, for a total of 139 128 dead, according to the Baltimore-based university, whose balance sheets refer.
The United States has known for several weeks an outbreak of infections in the south and west of the country, by far the most affected in the world in absolute terms.
In California, Los Angeles County health officials reported more than 4500 new cases in one day Thursday, a record.
“This week, we have taken a very worrying step,” Barbara Ferrer, head of the county's public health services, said in a statement. “Without drastic actions taken by everyone, we will not be able to slow the spread again.”
In Texas and Arizona, local authorities have ordered refrigerated trucks to increase the capacity of mortuaries.
