COVID-19: a Record 572 Deaths in 24 Hours in South Africa

(Johannesburg) Some 572 people have died from the coronavirus in recent times 24 hours in South Africa, a record high in one day which brings the total toll to 5940, the health ministry said on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, we have identified 572 new deaths linked to COVID – 07. This brings the cumulative total to 5940, “Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told a daily press briefing. South Africa is one of the most affected countries in the world by the pandemic and the most affected on the African continent with 394 948 confirmed cases of contamination at this stage.

Almost half of the deaths occurred in the Western Cape province, while the majority of positive cases are in Gauteng, where Johannesburg, economic and financial hub, and the capital Pretoria are located.

Mortality remains low, at around 1.5% on Wednesday and nearly 60% of infected people in the country have recovered.
