I know Thanksgiving is still over a week & a half away, but this bottle looked too interesting to wait to try. Same went for watching Charlie Brown’s Christmas on DVD last night. Don’t work A Christmas story will be on soon, I promise:)
I have already been a fan of their normal 2x line so i figured the winter warmer would be a safe bet as well.
Southern Tier described this as “[a] double spiced ale brewed in the tradition of a Swedish Glögg”
A common first question would be, “what is a Glögg anyways?” Fair enough, from Wikipedia: The main classic ingredients (of alcoholic glögg) are red wine, sugar, spices such as cinnamon,cardamom, ginger, cloves, and bitter orange.
Basically what we are looking at here are a lot of fall and winter aromatic spices which lend to a drinking experience more akin to a nice mead than to beer, which was what I was thinking the entire glass. This did not taste like a beer, it really did come across more like a mulled wine or mead. The ruby-red color, more or less lack of any lacing and aforementioned spices only go to enhance that opinion.
I am exaggerating? I would be lying if i said this tasted like a beer in the traditional sense of what we come to think of beer tasting like. Truthfully this was much more wine like – so much so, that i would not have been shocked if it was something that Dogfish Head had released. It is right up their alley, but in a much more accessible to the masses sort of way.
I was an instant fan to say the least, and I am fighting the urge to buy a case. Further enhancing the DFH connection the reception for 2xmas is so polarized. For as many people who love it, (Liz Murphy @Naptownpint is another huge fan) there are as many who would never want more than one.
So what is the skinny on it? Really if you can find a single bottle to try it is going to cost you maybe $1.79 – which a 6 pack going for the usual $8.99-$9.99, it is hardly a risky gamble. Give it a go and let me know what you think! Happy Holidays!
