Coronavirus. Salgado and Gisele's appeal to save the Amazon Indians
An appeal to save the natives of the Amazon. The Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, who has worked in the past ten years among the Amazonian tribes, has launched - with the support of Gisele Bündchen and other personalities - an appeal to the government, the congress and the supreme court of Brazil to intervene to stop the contagion from coronavirus.
Covid-19 threatens the populations of the Amazon, many of whom live in remote communities, and are already suffering from fires and river poisoning. Their situation is doubly critical because the territories reserved by law for the exclusive use of indigenous tribes are now invaded by miners, loggers and cattle farmers. These illegal activities have accelerated in recent weeks because they are out of control due to the health emergency.

Five centuries ago, these ethnic groups were decimated by diseases brought on by European colonizers. Since then, subsequent epidemiological crises have killed most of their populations. Now, with this new scourge spreading rapidly throughout Brazil, indigenous peoples, such as those living in isolation in the Amazon basin, could be wiped out altogether.
