A shelter for refugees in western Germany has been hit by a coronavirus epidemic, a Cologne district government press officer told CNN.
Refugee housing in Sankt Augustin, Germany, registered its first case last Friday, said Vanessa Nolte. Since then, 120 refugees, out of a total of 489 registered there, have tested positive.
Only 312 residents have been tested for coronavirus, as residents are not confined to the home, but can come and go, said Nolte. In addition, 10 staff members tested positive for the virus, she said.
The refugees are mainly young people and families, said Nolte; she could not give information on their nationality.
The refugees' accommodation was immediately put into total quarantine, which meant that no one could enter or leave, and the authorities are in the process of separating positive cases from negative ones.
This is proving difficult because some residents do not want to be displaced, added the press attaché.
