In January of this year, Kerala became the first Indian state to report a case of coronavirus. Now, four months later, he claims to have flattened the curve.

Although India has been under a nationwide strict ban since late March, cases have continued to increase - the country's 1.3 billion people have reported more than 74,000 cases, including more than 2,400 death.

But Kerala, a thin strip on the south coast of the country, seems to have reversed this trend.

Although Kerala has approximately 36 million people - almost as large as Canada - it has reported only 519 cases and four deaths. As of Saturday, there were only 16 active files, according to state finance minister Thomas Isaac.

By comparison, Maharashtra, India's most affected state, has reported more than 23,000 cases, including at least 860 deaths.

Experts say that part of Kerala's success is due to rapid action and learning from past epidemics. But Kerala also shows how disparate India is - and how much a person's chances of getting the virus depend on where they live in the country.
