While Americans find that some beaches are closed and fireworks for July 4 are rare, authorities fear that the holiday weekend may worsen the already devastating coronavirus pandemic.
More than two months after the first peak hit only a handful of states, the virus is again peaking in the South and Southwest.
The United States reported at least 51,842 new cases on Friday, marking the third consecutive day with a daily peak of more than 50,000 cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Those who have not given up celebrating America's independence outside find that the beaches of Miami and Los Angeles have been closed, that tubes in the rivers of Texas have been banned, and that the celebrations sponsored by the city will be broadcast live.
California, Arizona, Texas and Florida all recorded new record cases this week. Florida reported nearly 9,500 additional coronavirus cases on Friday, Texas adding 7,555 after two consecutive days with about 8,000 pieces.
Florida registers on average more new cases per day - 7,870 - than any other state, according to a CNN analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University. California and Texas follow closely.
The United States now has 2,793,435 cases of coronavirus, as well as 129,434 related deaths.
