What’s the new WhatsApp scam?

The latest scam that is sweeping WhatsApp is planning to do damage to the famous instant messaging application. You could be a victim if you do not take your precautions. Indeed, it is possible that one of these days you will receive a message from a user that you do not know, whose intention is to “meet you, get to know you and become your new friend”. This strategy is very common: some scammers claim that they are trying to “make new friends”. And if you ask them how they got your number, they slyly admit “they got the wrong number” and typed in yours by accident. But they still want to add you as a friend.

Throughout the conversation, the sender of the message may provide you with a photo that is supposed to be theirs to give you confidence. Once the introductions are made and the discussion is in full swing, they begin to tell you about their lives and their problems. Gradually, they seek your help by asking you to lend them small sums of money. The request is so clever that you see nothing but fire. Many “victims” do not feel the scam behind their screen: they take pity on them, are convinced that they are in serious trouble and send the sums of money they ask for. The damage is done. It is often far too late when you realize that you have simply been scammed by these malicious people. This is why cyber crime experts overwhelmingly advise users never to reply to messages from unknown numbers. The only way to protect yourself from these scams on WhatsApp, or any other messaging platform, is to delete this type of message and even block the number so as not to be harassed.

Block a phone number

In order to avoid any type of scam, after blocking the unwanted number on WhatsApp, you can also remedy the blocking directly on your directory so that this user is banned from accessing your mobile in one way or another . The procedure is simple: dial the number of this stranger and go to your settings to block him. From now on, you are reassured to know that this person will not be able to send you text messages by SMS or call you.

If your cell phone only allows you to block numbers by adding them to your contacts directory, you just need to add this one under the name “scam”, in order to avoid confusing it with another number.

Good to know : if you don’t want to fall for any type of scam in the future, it’s best to go to the Civil Guard Citizen Service Security Tips website, where they explain in detail what you must do to stop being scammed through the Internet or any other application.
