One of the stars of this year’s Planes of Fame airshow was this very rare Privateer.  The Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer is a World War II and Korean War naval patrol bomber derived from the Consolidated B-24 Liberator.  Externally similar to the Liberator, the fuselage was longer to accommodate a flight engineer’s station, and had a tall single vertical stabilizer which improved handling at low to medium altitudes. Introduced in 1943, 739 would be built.  This aircraft was delivered to the US Navy in 1945 then transferred to the Coast Guard before retirement in 1958.  After decades of service (1969-2003) as a fire bomber in Wyoming, this example took to the skies in 2015 after five years of restoration work performed in-between occasional airshow performances.  Nikon D500 w/Tamron 150-600mm.
