End of October: the clocks start again, the nights return and the days darken. The colors of fall fade to the dark grays and blacks of winter, and your brain finally registers that we have a whole six months terrible time to pass. But in Connaught Village, things don't seem so boring: world-famous British artists Rob and Nick Carter have created two colorful neon art installations to stimulate even the most miserable minds.
The first is Wavelength, a 152 tube creation large enough to cover two entire storefronts at 1 and 3 Porchester Place. The lights will work in an ever-changing sequence through each color in the spectrum, triggered by movement as you walk around. The way it works means you can create your own visual experience of the artwork with the way you move for a dynamic light show. Forget to walk in front - what about dancing?
The second piece was commissioned by Connaught Village and Church Commissioners especially for the local community, with the intention of moving it to the area. Echoing the vibrant rainbow hues of Wavelength, 11 concentric neon hearts form the backdrop for the brilliant white words 'Connaught Village', with the lights changing color throughout the day.
The vibrant colors and modern feel of the two rooms complement the perfect historic buildings and leafy plazas of Connaught Village. When you think of West London at its most beautiful, it's probably this one: wacky historic buildings, tree-lined streets and a mishmash of cobblestone streets.
It's the perfect setting for the stylish pieces of Rob and Nick Carter, who have a boutique at 5A Bathurst Street. The husband and wife duo have worked together for 20 years, examining the boundaries between the analog and digital worlds in mediums ranging from photography to painting - and, of course, neon. And at a time when things are looking particularly bleak, they really know how to light things up.
