Congratulations, Commencement Speech, Farewell

Posted on the 21 February 2020 by Francesco Lelli @francescolelli

Congratulations, congratulations, congratulations! You did it! You got your degree (or you are about to) and now you are preparing yourself for the next challenges in your life. With this post, instead of giving you my commencement speech, I will point you to words of others. There are plenty of commencement speech around and the world do not need another one. In addition, if you used my articles for doing your thesis you probably are tired or my words anyway!

What follows is a personal selection and by now, you should now have the critical thinking skills for analyzing what the speakers are saying. Take what you like and what works for you, drop what you don’t.

Let’s start with Jim Carrey: you can not contain the container!

Have a look at the 3 stories that Steve Jobs have to share with us:

  • Why he drop out from college and you have to trust that dots will connect in the future.
  • Love and loss, how you can get fired from a company that you started and learn how to take the most of it. Week looking, do not settle!
  • Ask yourself the following question: If today is going to be the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do? Remember that we all are going to be death soon.

Understand the importance of non technical skills and how this awareness can improve your quality of life and bring value in both a monetary and non-monetary way:

Discipline and methods are also important ingredient in achieving your goals and changing your life. Success is relatively simple simple to achieve: start each day with a task completed, find someone to help you in life, respect everyone, know that life is not fair and that you will fail often. With this awareness all you have to do is to take some risks, step up one when the time are the toughest, face down the bully, tackle the problems and never quit!

Now that you listen to these people telling you how to live your life, let me ask you a question: what do you really desire for yourself in life?

Now that you know what do you desire, the rest should be simple, isn’t it? Do you have the tools for achieving what you really want? Are you prepared to handle it?

Let me conclude with the final monologue that Johnny Devito did in the Big Kahuna, a movie that I would recommend you to watch in one of the coming rainy days.

Be careful whose advice you buy but be patient with those who supply it. As for the rest take an open mind, consider different point of views and nothing else matter!

Congratulations and good luck on your new journey.

In the case you would like to share your story with me, I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Staying in touch,

Francesco
