Concert At Porto Cathedral

It was standing room only at Sé for the concert performance of the Bach-Ensemble Wiesbaden and Schiersteiner Kantorei Wiesbaden on Monday night. Despite arriving more than 40 minutes early, we were still just lucky to nab the seats we did, with a decent view of the conductor. On Sunday night we saw an organ concert at Mosteiro de Moreira Maia, and this concert at Sé was to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the cathedral’s pipe organ, as part of the International Organ Festival:

The builder of the pipe organ at Sé is the same gentleman I mentioned in Sunday’s post — Georg Jann, 81, from Germany — who discovered that Mosteiro de Moreira Maia had a rare Arp Schnitger organ from 1701 and restored it. Jann was honoured at Porto City Hall in a ceremony on Monday, October 19, marking 30 years to the day that the Sé organ was built. He’d moved his operations from Germany to Portugal, and built the organs at other churches around the Porto area, including Lapa, Igreja de S. Francisco, Igrejas dos Grilos, Senhora da Esperança, Trindade, Senhor de Matosinhos, Mafamude and Capela das Almas. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the pipe organ at Igreja da Lapa.

There was also a grand fireworks display to end the festival tonight.
