There are several things of concern to me today: the shooting of 5 people overnight in DC and the body found on Route 50 today.
Both WUSA9 , NBC4, and WJLA are reporting that an unidentified body was found in the median strip of of U.S. Route 50 in Cheverly today, Monday morning, 10:20 a.m. Investigators are working to determine how the person died and how they got into the roadway. The body was found by a Maryland State Highway Administration worker at about . Monday near where Route 50 meets Kenilworth Avenue in Prince George’s County, Maryland State Police officials say. Authorities have not released any identifying information about the person, including their gender, age or name. There is no word as to how the person died, either. The body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death, according to state police. The person has not been identified yet. Anyone with information is asked to contact the MSP College Park Barrack at 301-345-3101.
Sunday night was particularly bloody in DC and that gives me cause for concern as most of these shootings took place not far from the Prince George’s County/DC border. Hopefully the people at the Transforming Neighborhood Initiative Office have a keen eye out. The shootings took place on Savannah Street SE and the 4900 block of G Street SE, both which are not far from the Southern Avenue border street, and Montello Avenue, not far from New York Avenue which leads to Route 50 .
WUSA9 reported all five shootings, “According to Metropolitan Police Department officials, a 17-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man were both shot at approximately 1:43 Monday morning in the 4900 block of G Street in Southeast. The girl suffered gun shot wounds to both legs and a graze wound to the chest. The male victim was shot in the face, however, police say the bullet passed through both of his cheeks. Both victims were conscious when they were transported to a local hospital. So far the only information available on possible suspects in the case is a vague description of a silver vehicle.
The spate of violence began around 9:40 Sunday night in the 1600 block of Montello Avenue in NE. That is where a man told dispatchers he heard the sound of gunshots and tried to escape the area on foot. The victim didn’t get far before realizing he had been hit in the hand. The victim reported seeing three men at the scene, however, there are no detailed descriptions of the suspects available. Two apparently unrelated shootings also occurred on the same block of southeast DC overnight, sending two victims to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the first incident was a domestic shooting in the 1300 block of Savannah Street around 10:30 Sunday night. MPD officers found a woman who had been shot in the leg by her boyfriend who fled the scene. Police were able to track the suspect’s cell phone and took him into custody within an hour after the shooting. The second Savannah Street incident happened in the same block around 2:42 Monday morning. That is where police say a man was shot in the lower half of both legs. The victim was taken to a local hospital where he is expected to recover. MPD officials say the two male suspects were last scene running toward Congress Street. If anyone has information related to these shootings, please contact the Metropolitan Police Department at 202-727-9099.
