My Comic Con 2013 coverage for True Blood ended much the same way it began with Michael McMillian (Steve Newlin) and Steve Newlin’s Field Guide to Vampires (and Other Creatures of Satan). If you haven’t seen our exclusive interview with him on Friday of Comic Con 2013, you can check it out here.
Like the interview, the panel entitled Chronicle Books: Behind the Scenes of a Pop Culture Powerhouse was an intimate and casual experience. Coming off of spending most of Saturday in Ballroom 20, this was a nice way to end my con. I was able to walk in, sit in the front row, and take some lovely photos and video. I love being in Ballroom 20 like anyone else but being able to take photos and video without having to dodge other people’s arms and cameras allowed me to focus on and enjoy the panel. It consisted of several Chronicle Books authors including Michael as well as editors. It included Steve Mockus, designers Michael Morris and Neil Egan, and authors Jeffrey Brown (Vader’s Little Princess),Francesco Marciuliano (I Could Pee on This), and Brandon Bird (Brandon Bird’s Astonishing World of Art).
One of the things that I most enjoyed about the panel is that I got to learn more about what kind of books Chronicle Books publishes. In addition to publishing the upcoming Steve Newlin’s Field Guide to Vampires and Other Creatures of Satan, Chronicle has also published True Blood: Eats, Drinks, and Bites from Bon Temps and its follow up book True Blood Drinks and Bites as well as other titles related to other HBO series.
During the course of the panel, we were treated to a powerpoint presentation of each author’s work and I got a good look at Steve Newlin’s Field Guide. While I did get a sneak peek of it while reading the teaser copy that was given out and signed by McMillian on Friday, the presentation showed just how authentic the book looks as an artifact from the show. Michael and Gianna Sobol encouraged the design of the book to be messy just like a real field guide would be which was a treat for Chronicle. Enjoy the photos and videos below!
