This is an annual event that is celebrated in Fort Kochi, mostly during the last 10 days of the year which culminates with the arrival of New Year. This carnival is the melting pot of many cultures that exists in Cochin side by side, namely the Portuguese, Dutch, Guajarati, Konkani, Malayalee, Andhra, Kannada, Tamil, Arab, Punjabi and Anglo Indians.  The next Cochin Carnival 2012-2013 in Fort Kochi is scheduled to be held from 9th Deember 2012 to 1st January 2013. This is the 29thedition of the Carnival and its origins go as back as the 16thcentury when the Portuguese ruled this region. They began the tradition of celebrating the New Year on the 1st of January and with this started the carnival. Out here one gets to witness and enjoy different forms of art, music, drama, food and other types of entertainment and celebrations that showcase the rich history and culture of this region. Beach volley ball, fireworks display, sea swimming, beach football and dirt bike races are some of the different types of games organised for the tourists. Besides all this, another major attraction of this carnival is the rally, which this year will be held on the 1st of January, 2013 in the Veli Ground from 3 pm onwards. The celebrations and other fairs start from 20th of December and continue till the 1st of January. Cochin Carnival is the much awaited festival by the local as well as the tourists. The preparations of the festival start in advance for hosting various games during the Carnival. People from across Kerala come here in fancy and traditional dress to enjoy the brilliant and the dazzling Cochin Carnival, which showcase rich culture and traditions, host unique spur-of-the-moment competition and multi faceted celebrations. Cochin truly bids the year in a grand way as well as welcome the new year with full of enthusiasm. Cochin carnival  is must visit celebration for one and all.

This carnival was an extension of the New Year Celebrations. Some of the major attractions of Cochin Carnival are –

  • It continues for 10 days bringing the entire city alive with celebrations.
  • It is one of the oldest carnivals celebrated in India which started around the 16th century.
