Ministers, government officials and Security Forces are taking strenuous measures to provide assistance and relief to thousands of people in the North and East who have been impacted by the severe weather condition during the past few days.
A group of Deputy Ministers, senior government officials rushed to the North on Thursday to get the first hand information on how the relief measures are being implemented with the coordination of government servants and service personnel at grassroots level.
All government officials including the Disaster Management officials at district level implemented a comprehensive mechanism to provide immediate relief services to the affected people in disaster-striken areas on the orders of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The President on Wednesday at a meeting with government officials gave specific instructions to the government officials for the provision of immediate services to the affected people.
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar and Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) rushed to Jaffna on Thursday and inspected the ongoing disaster relief efforts in the region.
Accompanied by the Director General of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) Maj.Gen. Udaya Herath (Retd) and senior tri-forces officers in Jaffna visited Katkulam Vidyalaya and Point Pedro Central School where people affected by the floods have been given temporary accommodation.
The Defence Secretary also inquired the issues faced by the affected people in these schools and distributed dry ration packs among the affected people. A meeting was held in Jaffna with the presence of Northern Province Governor R.N.Vethanayagam and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, MPs, the Defence Secretary, the Army Commander and government officials to discuss the situation in the province due to inclement weather.
Deputy Defence Minister Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) also visited the disaster-affected Ampara district on Thursday to assess the flood situation and oversee ongoing relief operations.
A special meeting was convened at the Ampara District Secretariat with officials from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), senior state officials and tri-forces senior officers. During the meeting, participants reviewed the current situation, discussed ways to strengthen disaster relief measures for affected families and planned efforts to mitigate further risks.The Deputy Minister was briefed by DMC officials on the extent of the disaster,including losses and damages to lives and property, as well as ongoing challenges in the district.
