Club Zero – Release News

Austrian auteur Jessica Hausner (Little Joe, Amour Fou) brings her unique style and vision to CLUB ZERO – a darkly comical and satirical exploration of cult mentality inspired by the fairytale The Pied Piper of Hamlin.

Starring Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, The Double, Alice in Wonderland) as the enigmatic Miss Novak, the film delves into the teacher-student-parent relationship in the throws of manipulation and radicalisation.

At an international boarding school, an unassuming, yet rigorous, Miss Novak (Wasikowska) joins the teaching staff to instruct a new class on ‘conscious eating.’ Her impressionable teenage students each have their own reasons for joining the class – to improve fitness, reduce their carbon footprint, or get extra credit. Although early lectures ocus on mindful consumption, Miss Novak’s discussions soon become increasingly disordered and extreme. A suspicious headmistress, concerned parents and the failing health of her students lead everyone to question the inscrutable Miss Novak’s motivations for teaching the class. As few devoted pupils fall deeper under her cult-like tutelage, they are given new, even more sinister goal to aspire to – joining the ominous ‘Club Zero.’

Co-starring Sidse Babbet Knudsen (Borgen, The Duke of Burgundy), Amir El-Masry (Limbo, In Camera, Vigil), Amanda Lawrence (Suffragette, Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Sam Hoare (Grace, Showtrial), Elsa Zylberstein (I’ve Loved You so Long) and Mathieu Demy (Tomboy) alongside British newcomers Ksenia DevriendtLuke BarkerFlorence BakerSamuel D Anderon and Gwen Currant.

A special Q&A with writer/director Jessica Hausner and composer Markus Binder will take place at The Garden Cinema on Tuesday 26th November. Tickets: https://www.thegardencinema.co.uk/film/club-zero/
