An Italian couple traveling from Ella to Kandy was attacked by a wild elephant in the Randenigala sanctuary on Monday (2) evening.
Police said the couple had stopped the car they were traveling near the end of the Randenigala reservoir dam after seeing an elephant.
When they began taking pictures, the elephant had run towards the car parked by the roadside and pressed its head against the car and tried to topple it hitting the car with its trunk. Police said that the Italian couple was not harmed as those in other vehicles who were nearby had driven the elephant into the sanctuary.
The vehicle had sustained heavy damages. After lodging a complaint with the police they had left to Kandy in another car.
