House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced his death in a statement. He was 80 years old.

"America today mourns the loss of one of the greatest heroes in American history: Congressman John Lewis, the conscience of Congress," said the California Democrat.

Lewis died the same day as the head of civil rights, the Reverend Cordy Tindell "CT" Vivian, who was 95 years old. Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests that swept the nation.

It is another blow to a country still struggling with the coronavirus pandemic, reeling from the deaths of nearly 140,000 Americans from Covid-19 as it has affected almost every aspect of American life.
