Civil Rights Icon, Juanita Abernathy, wife of the late Rev. Ralph David Abernathy passed away Thursday from complications from a stroke. She was 89.

Abernathy’s family shared in a statement that she passed away surrounded by her three remaining children and four grandchildren at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Rev. Abernathy was pastoring a church in Montgomery Alabama when he and his wife Juanita Abernathy met Rev. Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King.

It was in the Abernathy’s kitchen that the Montgomery Bus Boycott was derived.

“I started when there were no cameras and no newspapers writing nice things about you, instead they were writing all sorts of ugly things. But we kept going. It wasn’t about us. It wasn’t about me. It has always been about right and righteousness. Justice and equality. Not just for me and my family, but for all of God’s children,” Mrs. Abernathy shared with the AJC back in 2013.
