Cinemalaya Institute Continues to Pursue its Commitment to Train and Hone New Filmmakers

AFTER a year of hiatus brought by the pandemic, the Cinemalaya Institute, returns this year to pursue its commitment to provide education, training, and accreditation of film practitioners in key aspects of film production.

Established in 2015, the Institute has trained new and upcoming Filipino filmmakers to ensure the growth and sustainability of Cinemalaya as the leading independent film festival in Asia.

The training arm of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. (CFI), the Institute plans to open selected courses following the limiting protocols imposed by the national government.

The training programs to be offered virtually include: SCRIPTWRITING WORKSHOP FOR FILM by veteran playwright Ricky Lee; MASTER WORKSHOP ON CONTINUING NARRATIVES FOR BROADCAST AND WEB-BASED PLATFORMS by award-winning TV and film director Jose Javier Reyes; and PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT by John Paul Su; and an ASSISTANT DIRECTOR'S WORKSHOP FOR FILM AND TELEVISION by Jay Abello.

Slated from June 9 to August 4, the scriptwriting workshop encourages and explores new ways of storytelling in this time of pandemic; while the master workshop on continuing narratives, happening on August 14 to October 29, 2021, introduces and trains writers in the conceptualization and rendition of continuing series following the Korean template.

From July 15 to August 13, 2021, the production management workshop, meanwhile, will teach the fundamental skills needed to manage a film production and examines the professional practices to help filmmakers develop their production book.

To be offered on September 1 to 29, 2021, the Assistant Director's Workshop is for production people who want to become a professional AD. Instead of years training, this course will propel them a few notches higher and will give them the necessary knowledge about being an AD, which is one of the most important roles and positions in a film or TV production.

Interested individuals should submit their application at [email protected].

The deadlines for submission of applications are: for Assistant Director program, August 20, 2021; for Program Management, July 2, 2021; and for the Master Workshop on Continuing Narratives, July 23, 2021.
