My brother Josh had insisted one Sunday that the family dine at his latest discovery, Chubby Chicken, located on the corner of Esteban Abada and Rosa Alvero Streets, Katipunan, Quezon City.
For easy reference, the place is behind McDonald's Katipunan, and is nearby restaurants like Fruit Magic and Shakey's, all of which I used to frequent back in college. Now, had Chubby Chicken been around then, I would've spent quite a lot of lunches there, too, given the restaurant's large servings and budget-friendly price tags.
Huge cork boards adorn Chubby Chicken's walls where guests can leave random doodles, notes, feedback, etc, for others to see.
It's this particular portion of the board that really got my attention: a bunch of ID photos plastered on the board, worthy of some serious LOL-ing. I mean, what? Isn't this the most absurd yet interesting thing ever?
But anyway, on to what we had that day.
We had a huge plate of Cheese Fries - For Sharing (Php150) to start off lunch. We really liked Chubby Chicken's tomatoes-onions-cheese sauce mix atop crispy shoestring potatoes (which I appreciated were not totally oily). This tasted a lot like a nice garden salad taken with fries.
Their best-seller (and that which Josh highly recommended) are their Chicken Strips (Php122 for just the chicken, PhpP130 with rice, and Php145 with fries).
These are essentially breaded chicken breasts served with white garlic dip. Chubby Chicken's is much like Bon Chon's in the sense that the poultry may be served with your choice of sauce (sweet or spicy?). I, of course, went with the former. Theirs is a very good, special sauce, the type that is just the right amount of sweet, ergo, a good complement to the otherwise bland chicken portion and slightly tangy sauce. Unlike Bon Chon though though I felt Chubby Chicken's sauce cut through the meat more, if that makes sense.
Each serving comes with about four large "strips", so if you aren't too hungry, this may be split with a friend.
Jae wanted his strips with fries. In this case, the sweet/ spicy sauce was served on the side.
Their pasta selection may be served with strips as well. My dad chose the Bolognese (Php145) which I found to be just okay - not exceptional, but it wasn't too bad that you had to force yourself to finish.
Ours wasn't a diverse lineup since we all wanted a piece of their bestselling strips. But that's okay since this won't be our last trip to Chubby Chicken. :) It will most definitely be an option for when we want good, quick, fuss-free, and affordable food.
Do try!
