Glengoyne Distillery has been in operation since its founding in 1833. Located at Dumgoyne just north of Glasgow, the distillery is one of Scotland's most picture perfect and is well worth visiting for a tour, especially to see the hidden valley below, which you wouldn't know was there from the main road.
The Glengoyne Distillery produces a Highland single malt whisky which is matured in the Lowlands. This is due to the Distillery bring located on the Highland line. Glengoyne's stills are in the Highlands while the maturing casks of whisky rest across the road in the Lowlands.
The area around Glengoyne provided excellent cover for whisky producers who wanted to make whisky but not pay the heavy taxes. According to records, there was at least eighteen illicit whisky stills operating in the area.
Originally named Glenguin, the name is changed to Glengoyne in 1907. As far as we know, Glenguin means "Glen of the Wild Geese" in Gaelic.
