1) The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug- 9.3M Christmas, 149.9M Total
2) The Wolf Of Wall Street- 9.1M Christmas, 9.1M Total
Don’t look for Wolf Of Wall Street to have amazing legs. The film is scoring a poor C cinemascore, as audiences nationwide are not responding well to the ample amount of sex, or the films 3 hour running time. It may do well this weekend, but once the word is out, look for Wolf to drop fast in a crowded marketplace.
3) Anchorman 2- 8.1M Christmas, 56.6M Total
4) Secret Life Of Walter Mitty- 7.8M Christmas, 7.8M Total
This one could surprise in the coming weeks. Audiences are pretty happy with the film, giving it a B+ cinemascore. Ben Stiller’s film wasn’t beloved by critics, but then again neither was Marley and Me.
5) American Hustle- 7.4M Christmas, 34.1M Total
6) 47 Ronin- 7.0M Christmas, 7.0M Total
7M opening day for a film that cost almost 200M to make? Even if it continued to make 7M every day over the long weekend, it would still not be on track to make back its budget domestically.
7) Frozen- 6.3M Christmas, 210.4M Total
8) Saving Mr Banks- 5.1M Christmas, 19.1M Total
9) Grudge Match- 3.9M Christmas, 3.9M Total
This one is having a tough time getting started. With a B+ cinemascore though, it will be interesting to see how this plays in the coming weeks.
10) A Madea Christmas- 2.9M Christmas, 34.0M Total
11) Catching Fire- 2.5M Christmas, 377.8M Total
12) Walking With Dinosaurs- 1.7M Christmas, 11.5M Total
13) Mandela: A Long Walk To Freedom- 1.3M Christmas, 1.5M Total
14) Believe- 1.2M Christmas, 1.2M Total
Justin Bieber’s newest film isn’t doing what his last one did. Typically these types of films are heavily frontloaded, and do the bulk of their business in the first weekend. He’ll be lucky to get to 10M domestic.
