Ever wonder why designers use stick thin models with no breasts in their runway shows? Wise Geek explains that one reason is because of the way designers want their clothes to be displayed during the marketing process. Typically, designers use tools such as busts and mannequins when they are designing their clothes. These devices provide a very basic frame on which clothing can drape and hang. When designers transfer their clothing to a person, they want their designs to maintain this natural effect. Fashion models essentially become living racks for the clothing. A criticism of this practice is that an extremely small percentage of women have the small frame necessary to get the clothing to hang the way it was designed. Interestingly enough, one of the most common reasons women want to get breast enlargement surgery is so they will look better in clothes and feel “more like a woman.” It’s an interesting dichotomy. We all know that “everything is bigger and better in Texas” and that includes breasts. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), breast implants have been the top plastic surgery in the United States since 2006. In a recent study published in the official medical journal of the ASPS, 98% of the women surveyed said that their breast augmentation results met or exceeded their expectations. The study noted psychological benefits as well: 90% of the women reported increased self-esteem after breast augmentation. No surprise there. When you look good, you feel good!
The trick with breast augmentation is to not go too big or too small. Which is why you need to consult with a surgeon who can help you decide which breast size is right for your body frame and desired visual goal. Dr. Diane Gibby is a board-certified plastic surgeon who believes that, “As the years go by, almost every woman notices a gradual change in the size, shape and feel of her breasts. Gravity, pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight gain and loss all take their toll on a woman's body. Even if the volume of the breast stays the same, the firmness and elasticity are often lost. Surgery of the breast can improve these problems and contribute to a more youthful contour. Underdeveloped, small breasts can be enlarged, a lot or a little. Oversized, burdensome breasts can be reduced to a smaller, more proportional and comfortable size. Sagging, shrinking breasts can be lifted and reshaped. At the Women's Center for Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, several breast-shaping procedures are offered to patients who seek improvement, not perfection, in their appearance.”
