rare sighting of monkey at Triplicane
Elsewhere in France
things are different – ‘No merci!’ as
French police Taser chocolate-loving monkey after it causes 'bedlam' at
school by attacking children to get to their treats. Daily Mail reports that a monkey hopped up on chocolates was finally
subdued by French police with a stun gun after the petite primate terrorized
elementary school and college students.
Marseille police
had been called more than a dozen times because of the North African macaque,
which they believe was once an illegal pet and had been subsisting on Kinder
chocolates given to him by children. The monkey had been responsible for
scratching children and “causing bedlam.” Authorities finally cornered the
mischievous monkey and used a Taser to stop the primate only after it had bitten one officer, the French
paper La Provence reported.
“It is a lesser
evil, the maximum we wanted to do to not have to kill him," the police
commissioner said. Reports suggest that
the macaque is recovering and will
eventually join a local zoo. The African macaque had apparently been living in
the Castellanne neighborhood of Marseilles for several weeks and police were
called more than a dozen times over its unruly behavior.
It took police
weeks to catch the monkey and they say its chocolate-only diet has led to
malnutrition - which officers believe
caused the monkey to become more aggressive. A police spokesperson said: 'We
were given the location, but the time we got there he had left every time.'
Upon capture, the monkey was fed bananas
and other treats once it was checked by a vet - and police say it soon became
friendly. Officers are still searching
for the animal's original owner, who could face charges of illegally possessing
a wild animal. Following a quarantine period the macaque will be taken to live
in a local zoo.
