More than three times as many daily coronavirus cases have been reported in China’s northeast since an outbreak began.
BEIJING (AP), — Sunday’s tripled number of coronavirus cases caused by an outbreak in China’s northeast. Authorities tightened their control over access to Shanghai in East China. They suspended bus service to Shanghai, a city of 24 million, and required a virus test for all who wanted to enter.
More than three times the number of cases reported by the government on China’s mainland yesterday, 1,938 were added to today’s report.
Three-quarters, or 1,412, were found in Jilin, a northeastern province. There, access to Changchun, an industrial city, has been restricted. Following a series of infections, families were instructed to remain at home.
China’s infection rates are low, but authorities enforce a “zero tolerance” strategy to quarantine all infected persons.
The Hong Kong government reported 15,789 daily new cases per day, almost half of Saturday’s total.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam warned that the current infection spike might still be a long way off.
Zhang Yan, deputy director at the provincial Health Commission, stated that authorities in Jilin had increased their anti-disease efforts after concluding that their previous response was inadequate.
According to a transcript, Zhang stated that the emergency response system in certain areas was inadequate.

The city government urged the public to stay put unless it was necessary. The city government announced that the bus service would be stopped starting Sunday.
The city’s health agency stated that all visitors to Shanghai or returning residents must submit a negative nucleic acids test report within 48 hours of arrival.
There were 831 new cases in Changchun, 571 in Jilin, 150 each in Qingdao, the eastern port city, and 60 in Shenzhen on the mainland. These are all business centers that are adjacent to Hong Kong.
