1) Last week, we reviewed Father and Son. This week, we’re reviewing the other title that Crunchyroll announced in their 4 manga license day, Donyatsu.
2) Donyatsu is a manga you might have heard about.
3) We hope you enjoyed the picture of a marshmallow eating the back of a donut’s behind.
…Sorry, we meant “marchmallow”.

Synopsis: “Chewy buddies in a strange world! Summer, 20XX. Donyatsu, a cat-like chocolate-covered donut, and his buddies begin their chillaxed lives in an abandoned world. Where have the humans gone? What happened to this world? It’s the beginning of a laid-back sci-fi adventure full of mystery and wonder.”
What did you hope Donyatsu would be like after reading the synopsis?
Justin: It’s first sentence is “Chewy buddies in a strange world!” What am I supposed to say about that that isn’t terrible?
In all seriousness, unlike the other manga Crunchyroll announced, I did hear of Donyatsu and its post apocalyptic nonsense so I was expecting to get a kick out of it. The anime was a short, so that more or less meant the manga wouldn’t be too long.
Helen: I expected a cute, fluffy manga about cats that are half cat, half delicious pastry.
What did the manga turn out to be?
Helen: I’m, not quite sure honestly? There is a little bit of cute stuff but apparently this is a post apocalyptic world where humans have died out, there are skeletons everywhere, rats that want to eat the characters, and the cats are all super intelligent so it’s really really bizarre.
Justin: It has an Eva chilling out with a crew called Donyatsu, Bagel, Baumcougar, Rollnya, and Kumacaron, spitting hot fire.

I’m not even sure how much more I can say that this manga is epic, other than the fact that we have rats that control this human less world called “marchmallows.” Their weapon of choice is a fork.
Would you recommend it?
Justin: It’s exactly the right kind of crazy for me, and a must read manga if you’re looking for great manga that’s not terribly long (5 volumes, 10-12 pages a chapter).
Helen: Do you like strange things? Did that summary above make you go “okay I gotta try this”? Then do it, it’s so weird I can see it turning a lot of people off, I’m not sure when I’ll go back to read more of it but I’m totally going to try and find a keychain of that jelly roll cat in the meantime.
