Chasing Chasing Amy- A Solid Rumination On The Effects Of Kevin Smith’s Title And LGBTQ Culture
Quick Take: I didn’t discover Chasing Amy until much later, when it had a Criterion release. At the time, my education on LGBTQ culture was not where it is now, and I never really gave the movie much thought. My first introduction to Kevin Smith was actually Dogma, and I loved that. I’ve kinda felt like I’ve been chasing Dogma for Kevin’s entire career. But, to have this story told from this unique perspective, from someone who was exploring their queerness and wasn’t sure where they even landed in terms of sexuality, and how Chasing Amy serves as a piece of the puzzle. The movie does explore the problematic relationship that the LGBTQ+ community has with a film that has a straight man pining for a lesbian, who ultimately chooses the straight man, directed by a straight man, and everyone involved contributes their thoughts. Kevin Smith really has some profound moments, as does Joey Lauren Adams. But taking someone we don’t know and letting them explain their complicated history with the film, the good and bad, ultimately is what makes this work. Sadly, there was no audio description given to me. Please check out the video for more.
