As we reported earlier Charlaine Harris the creator of the Sookie Stackhouse series that the hit HBO show True Blood is based off from will be at SleuthFest this year in Florida. The Mystery Writers of America help put together SleuthFest, and this year the event will be held more in the Central Florida area. SleuthFest runs March 1-4, and on March 3rd at noon Charlaine will be the main luncheon speaker.
The Orlando Sentinel was able to do a phone interview with Charlaine and talk to her about the event she is going to be at within the next few weeks, but they also get into the show True Blood and how it has helped her with her books. I find it interesting on what she has to say for True Blood for helping her career.
“The Sookie Stackhouse novels were selling well before the TV show, but the TV show led to a lot more exposure and readers. And a lot went on to read my other work. It was a wonderful thing for my bank account.”
Here is a preview from Charlaine Harris her self on the latest Sookie Stackhouse book “Deadlocked” that is going to be released on May 1.
“It is the next-to-the-last book, which gives it a bit of heft. It’s about tying up some threads in this long-running series and answering questions that readers have had. There’s new action, but there are decisions made about older issues in the books.”
I’m pretty sure some of you know this but book number 13 will be the last book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. It’s kind of funny because that book will be coming out in 2013. Here is what Charlaine had to say on if she planed that or not.
“Oh, I don’t really plan a lot. My contract will be over. I’m sure my publisher would be glad [for more], but I feel I’ve said everything about Sookie and her world. I hate doing it just for the money. I’m not above wanting the money. I just hate the idea I’m dragging out something for that reason.”
She has also said that she has known how the series will end around about the time she was writing the second book.
She was also asked if she was happy with all of the decisions that Alan Ball has made on the show True Blood. This is her answer on that:
“Certainly I’ve had thoughts about that. I’m very fond of Alan. I think he’s a genius. He’s made good decisions for television. He’s not consciously trying to imitate the books. That would be boring for him and boring for me. If I knew what was going to happen, why would I watch? Viewers and readers are getting two experiences.”
Looks like we will have to say good-bye to Sookie in the book world soon. If you are going to SleuthFest this year and happen to see Charlaine Harris please tell us below! We would love to hear your story.
