Champagne WineChain, an NFT marketplace, has welcomed the prominent estates Louis Roederer, Cos d’Estournel, and Egon Müller.
This direct-to-consumer network allows users to purchase a non-transferable token connected to a genuine bottle of wine from the winery.
According to WineChain, you can buy, sell, and store great wines online while maintaining “perfect provenance and a minimum carbon footprint.”
Champagne houses Louis Roederer, Fleur de Miraval, and Henri Giraud have agreed to offer “wiNeFTs” on the WineChain website.
Several well-known French estates, as well as Egon Müller from Germany, Graham’s Port from Portugal, Ceretto, Parusso, and Roberto Voerzio from Italy, and Egon Müller from Austria, are also on board.
“They are all convinced that the solid guarantee of traceability offered by Web3, and the transparency and accessibility of transactions designed to open the world of wine to a whole new generation of enthusiasts, represent the future,” said Antoine Pétrus, director of major international estates at WineChain.
“Through this initiative, WineChain is resolutely committed to offering this disruptive, blockchain-based technology to all châteaux, estates and Champagne houses whose search for excellence is ongoing and permanent.”
It was founded in April 2022 by four entrepreneurs: Xavier Garambois, the former head of Amazon Europe, Marc Perrin of Château de Beaucastel, Guillaume Jourdan, the CEO of VitaBella, and Nicolas Mendiharat, the CEO of WineChain. Zenithwings, a Portuguese corporation, created WineChain
NFTs are unique, “one-of-a-kind” assets
Fungible assets, such as dollars, euros, gold, and Bitcoin, are simple to trade. Non-fungible tokens, on the other hand, have distinct characteristics that distinguish them as “one-of-a-kind” assets.
NFTs are built on blockchain technology, which stores irrefutable proof of ownership in a decentralized ledger.
Several sectors were taken over during the 2021 crypto bull run. The first Tweet was sold as an NFT for $2.9 million by Jack Dorsey, the developer of Twitter; Kings of Leon published an album as an NFT; and Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, auctioned off the original source code as an NFT.
On a platform called BlockBar, several top spirits businesses sold NFTs attached to real bottles. Himkok, a Norwegian pub, released an NFT drink menu, and Stella Artois auctioned off NFTs of virtual racehorses with Stella-branded saddlecloths.
The NFT mania has waned since then, but WineChain believes their entirely digitalized and decentralized certification process has the potential to transform the way fine wine is marketed directly to customers.
