The first London underground journey took place on 9th January 1863 between Paddington and Farringdon on the Metropolitan Railway and now whizzes 1,107 million passengers around the capital every year.
To celebrate the Tube’s 150th anniversary The Park Lane Hotel have designed a London Underground Afternoon Tea, served in their Art Deco lounge Palm Court.
The Tea begins with a refreshing Metropolitan 1863 cocktail, a blend of Beefeater 24 gin and blackcurrant tea. Beefeater was specifically chosen as it produced very close to Kennington Station and was founded by James Burrough who bought his first London distillery in 1863, the same year the London Underground was born.
The sandwiches and savouries are designed to honor a different element of the Underground and include a ‘London Bridge’ roll, ‘Gloucester Road’ tart, ‘Royal Oak’ bagel and a delicious saffron ‘Circle and District Line’ roulade with coronation chicken and spinach.
Homemade plain and fruit scones are then served with ‘Limehouse’ Curd and ‘Victoria’ Plum Jam and clotted cream along with London Underground pastries. ‘Bank’ Pound Cake, ‘Paddington’ cake, ‘Swiss (Roll) Cottage’ and the star of the collection is a perfect ‘Victoria’ orange sponge.
TIP: Ask for a table in the sofa area and take note of the back-to-front hotel entrance; the hotel was actually designed to welcome people from Brick Street.
The London Underground Tea is made to order so must be requested in advance.
