CCP and BENCH Join in Preserving The Filipino Terno

THE successful turnout of Fashioning the Terno mentoring program for regional designers in 2017 inspired both the Cultural Center of the Philippines through the CCP Cultural Exchange Department (CED) and Bench to team up anew in undertaking a second phase for 2018 entitled TERNOCON, a terno making convention and contest for regional designers. TERNOCON was presented in a press conference held at the Bench Café in Taguig City recently, graced by Filipino professional designers Inno Sotto, JC Buendia, Cary Santiago and Len Cabili.

The contest proper will be held at the CCP Main Theater stage on November 11, 2018, where 28 finalists from 17 provinces nationwide will vie for the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards for two categories - Balintawak Cocktail Terno and Formal Evening Terno. The program will also include performances by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, MEN Vocal Ensemble and the Sinala Manunubli from Batangas and an exhibition of dolls in ternos by Pampango artist Cholo Ayuyao at the Main Theater Lobby. It will also showcase new couture ternos by Inno Sotto, JC Buendia, Cary Santiago and Len Cabili. The winners will be chosen by a select team of experts who will judge the entries based on adherence to tradition and competition guidelines; craftsmanship/execution of design; creativity; and wearability/functionality. The contest and cultural performance will be aired via live streaming at 7:30pm through the CCP and Bench Facebook page.

TERNOCON aims to encourage the use of the terno as a popular form of formal dress; to connect the knowledge and skills from Fashioning the Terno - Phase 1 to a contemporary application in terno making; and to inspire and motivate regional designers to create ternos that are at par with the construction skills of senior fashion designers.
