The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has confirmed that a bacterial infection is responsible for the recent deaths of animals in Beira Lake, Colombo.
Chief Veterinary Officer Mohamed Ijas stated that laboratory tests on tissue samples from the deceased animals identified the bacterium Pasteurella multocida as the cause. The investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Homagama Veterinary Investigation Unit, included tissue analysis, blood tests, and other diagnostic procedures.
“We have confirmed the presence of Pasteurella multocida, but further tests are being carried out to assess the full extent of the situation,” he added.
As a preventive measure, the CMC will begin administering antibiotic vaccinations to the remaining animals starting today.
