Some sad news for Formula One and Moto GP fans in Spain. The Catalan Economy Minister Andreu Mas-Colell has revealed that Catalonia is considering getting rid of two of the biggest motor sport races that are held at the Montmelò circuit just outside Barcelona.
This will come as a shock to motor racing fans the world over, not just in Spain if the Spanish Grand Prix and Moto GP races are scrapped.
The problem seems to come from the high fees that are paid to hold the races each year. Valencia, who have the fantastic street circuit has also been experiencing problems with the fees and reports state that they are holding talks with Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone to try and iron out a new deal.
Mas-Colell said: “We may reconsider holding Formula 1 and motorcycling Grands Prix here. It is not clear whether we can do so in the current economic climate. It is not the first thing we will reconsider, but in times like these we have to look very closely at what we are actually spending money on.”
The Circuit de Catalunya currently has a deal to host the annual Spanish Grand Prix until 2016.
